Address: Av san martin 536 70 , San carlos de bariloche 8400, Argentina Show on map
Bariloche's biggest hotel (covering nearly three city blocks with over-street bridges connecting the different sectors) pulls out all the stops - a couple of restaurants, a casino, piano bar, etc. Rooms are all you'd expect for the price, with a couple of surprising flaws, like cracked tiles and fraying carpet. But these are minor quibbles - the Panamericano (whose sister hotel in Buenos Aires is even more fabulous) has covered every base, from babysitting services to a gymnasium and health club offering everything from massages to lymphatic cleansing. If you're going to be spending this sort of money, it's worth going the extra mile and getting a lakeview room - the huge picture windows give a truly panoramic view out over the gorgeous alpine architecture in the historic center of town, down to Lake Nahuel Huapi and out over the mountain range beyond.

Staying at the Panamericano is an experience in itself, but once you tire of that, it's a short walk to La Esquina (cnr Urquiza and Moreno), one of the most atmospheric little restaurant/cafes in town. Locals and travelers alike gather here for drinks and tasty Patagonian dishes like smoked deer shaslicks.
