Address: Calle 25, 544, Peninsula , Punta del este 20100, Uruguay
Just about the cheapest lodging in Punta, this basic HI-affiliated hostel isn't big on atmosphere or amenities. But you can't beat the location, a stone's throw from central Plaza Artigas. The hostel makes a good first impression, with a bright façade and a cozy front parlor with fireplace (converted to a dorm in summer). Most dorms have six or eight beds, and there's a side patio for warm days. Then there's the dark side: the miniscule kitchen (for heating water only - no cooking), the often sullen staff and the claustrophobic 11-bed dorm downstairs, with a scary-looking triple-decker bunk. Laundry service is available for a fee that increases steeply in high season. There's one internet computer and a few decrepit-looking bikes for rent.
