Address: Cnr calles 30 & 18, Peninsula , Punta del este 20100, Uruguay
Hands down Punta's best value, this ultra-cool hostel is always jam-packed with international youth. There are hammocks out front, surfboard and bike rentals, and breakfast till noon. But the biggest draw is the glass-walled corner bar with comfy cushions and partial views of the beachfront. With its friendly multilingual staff and enviable location near the bus station, the 1949 fills up almost nightly. Advance reservations are an absolute must in peak season. In summer it's strictly a hostel; in the off-season a couple of upstairs rooms get converted to private doubles. Amenities include a small guest kitchen, a couple of internet computers in the lobby and wi-fi in every room. Light sleepers who don't plan to party till dawn, beware: it can get pretty rowdy here. Returning revelers may awaken you all night long, and spontaneous jam sessions often erupt in the bar. (Witness the duct-taped guitar dangling from the wall!)

Hook up with new friends at the hostel's bar, then roam the nightspots down by the port for an evening of drinking and dancing. The port area also has one of Punta's few dependably cheap eateries, ChiviterÃa Marcos (tel: 449932; Rambla Artiga); the challenge here is choosing which of the 12 toppings and nine sauces you want on your chivito (steak sandwich)- then balancing it back to your table!
