This 16th-century-listed building has the requisite brick step-fronted facades, with main rooms which were heavily gentrified in the 18th century. The factor that sets this place apart from several similarly historic hotels is the relatively large garden. While hardly a park, it is large enough for a short stroll and has some attractive corners.Accessed by a creaky new stairway, the 'Knight' rooms are amid the antique beams of the atmospheric lofts. Good, if relatively small, bathrooms have a tub and plastic-marble fittings. The more ornate 'Baroness' rooms have high ceilings with powerful, if sometimes unconvincing, motifs and mouldings. Colour schemes vary. Bathrooms are bigger but similarly styled to those in the Knight rooms. Cherubs, animal paintings and a big crystal chandelier hang in the breakfast room which, despite its olive-and-gold decor, manages to avoid feeling chintzy. The faux marble in the other public areas is less appealing. The meeting room is intriguing for the seated buddha who sits quietly on the hearth before the marble fireplace. A small sitting area in what was once a kitchen retains a Madonna-and-child chimney breast and dispenses promotional brochures from an antique aga-style former stove.
