Right on central Burg Square, this modern international hotel has all the usual business trimmings. In addition there are some surprisingly quirky historical details. Certain rooms have magnificent views towards the Belfry.
Architecturally this modern building isn't a beauty but tiled roofing and exposed brickwork help it blend somewhat with the local environment. Most rooms are typical of business hotels apart from the devil-may-care use of turquoise bathroom floor tiles. However several south-facing rooms have recycled a lot of old wooden beams to create a convincing aged effect. West-facing deluxe rooms have the best views. The large, airy foyer displays splodges of abstract art. The heritage-effect bar area is particularly popular with businessmen during the 17:00-19:00 happy hour. Hidden unexpectedly downstairs are some old vaults that were once the crypt of a cathedral. Exhibition cases here show a selection of archaeological discoveries from the site. On the 8th floor there's a windowless small swimming pool and a cramped fitness area.

There are dozens of tempting eateries all around Burg and Markt squares. For something a little less touristy, try walking north three blocks to Jan Eyckplein where several classy little restaurants include the tempting candlelit Spinola.

How to get there

From Brussels Airport (BRU):
Distance to the Crowne Plaza Bruges is 100 kilometres, approximately 1 hour 10 minutes drive.

Getting there. The airport's railway station is located below the terminal building on the basement level, and is accessible by elevator. Airport City Express trains leave every 10-30 minutes between 5 a.m. and midnight, and travel to the city's three main stations. Trains run between Brussels Midi station and Bruges every 30 minutes. The journey takes under one hour. Metered taxis can be found in front of the Arrivals hall; licensed cabs have a blue and yellow emblem. Price is subject to change.

Getting around. Cycling and walking are ideal ways to explore Bruges. A reliable and cheap bus service is available, as well as boat and horse-drawn carriage trips. Cars and coaches cannot be driven in the town centre.
