Lonely Planet review

Big glass doors slide open to reveal breathtakingly trendy pale-grey decor. Staff, dressed immaculately all in black, usher you into the lap of designer luxury. If money is no object and you value faultless contemporary style over chintzy historical ambience, this in-vogue masterpiece is THE place to be seen in Bruges.

Apart from the cheaper wheelchair accessable double, all rooms have jaccuzi baths with a bewildering variety of swirl options. In addition an enclosed 'tropical rainstorm' shower drenches you with an unbelievably powerful 36 litres of water per minute. A curious surround-lamp in the back headboard creates a subtle halo effect around the bed (as well as nighmares for the cleaning staff). Standard rooms are not enormous and don't have particularly interesting views. Nonetheless, there are original modern art prints, firm mattresses and sumptuous linen. Grey-white beams create atmosphere in the upper storeys where the Filips de Goede duplex suite offers a superb perch above the St Anna canal. The spacious Oranjerie reading room has a wide collection of art books and daily newspapers in various languages.
