This 'Small Luxury Hotel of the World' considers itself one of the Best in Bruges. Host to princes and presidents, it displays photos of its celebrity guests from the Belgian Crown Prince Philippe to Jools Holland, Jacques Delors and Jean-Michel Jarre.

Staff are extremely obliging and standards are high. The interior styling by designer Pieter Porters has created interest using lots of curiosity knick-knacks from old skis to antique shoe-expanders. Colours vary quite considerably from room to room but the effect is very slightly contrived. There is a supplement for rooms facing the canal. These give good views, sometimes romantically distorted by the original Merano glass. Although they are right above the road, resulting in some traffic rumble, it's not too bad late at night when Bruges's streets are virtually deserted. Most accommodation is in larger 'executive' rooms. Slope-sided 'standard' rooms aren't really standard at all as there are only four, tucked away in the roof. The swimming pool and jacuzzi are within the glass-roofed rear veranda.
