Occupying three stately town houses and lavish newer premises on the edge of the EU quarter, close to Trône metro station, this grand English-style hotel might appear to be a jodhpurs-and-foxhounds type of place, but for all its manor-house grandeur it has a languid, laid-back air.

Acres of marble in the lobby and bar (once a pharmacy - open the cabinets and you'll see the little wooden drawers) flow out to a hedged courtyard set around a heritage-listed magnolia tree, where you can sample the in-house Brighton Restaurant's English fare. Endowed with chandeliers, paintings and antiques, all 108 rooms are individually configured and furnished, including 11 mezzanine rooms. All are endowed with waffle-weave bathrobes and Molton Brown of London bath products. Despite the priceless antiques, such as Chinese porcelain vases, casually scattered about, the Stanhope is extremely kid-friendly. Some 25 rooms are situated on fully nonsmoking floors and, all-too-rare for Brussels, there's excellent wheelchair access. Equally rare in this town is the free high-speed cable internet in all rooms (as well as three phone lines), and free wi-fi in public areas.
