Lonely Planet review

It's a little on the cosy side here, but the gregarious owner has a large number of options available. One of the most welcoming hostel-cum-guesthouses in Budapest, the Garibaldi has five rooms - a double and four mansard rooms - with shared bathrooms and kitchen in a flat just around the corner from Parliament.

Also in the same building, a typical mid- to late-19th century structure with a central udvar (courtyard), are at least a half-dozen apartments. One is lovely especially, with a double bed and kitchen, and overlooks a quiet courtyard; attached is a smaller bedroom and the bathroom. Some of the flats have been renovated lately, but the best ones are the old-world-style flats with parquet floors, ancient carpets, tasselled lamps and oversized furniture. If you're visiting Budapest, why not go the whole hog and have the total Central European experience? Discounts may be available for longer stays.
