Address: Andrassy ut 111 , Budapest 1063, Hungary Show on map
This stunning five-star hotel, just off a leafy boulevard now listed as a Unesco World Heritage Site, has 70 tastefully decorated rooms in a listed building. It's undoubtedly a lovely place, but the address sounds a bit posher than it is. You actually enter from Munkácsy Mihály utca 5-7.The Bauhaus-style hotel was designed and built in 1937 by Alfréd Hajós, the first Hungarian Olympic medallist who won two golds at the first modern Olympic Games in Athens in 1896, then went on to become a world-renowned architect. The lobby and ground-floor restaurant look fresher since their recent renovation, as do many of the guestrooms; the use of etched glass and mirrors as well as wrought iron (even as a canopy over some of the beds) is inspired and successful. Almost half of the rooms - 37 in fact - have balconies, and you'll find a Jacuzzi in each of the seven suites. It's one of our all-time favourite places to stay in Budapest.

An excellent place for lunch or dinner, especially on a warm summer evening, is Robinson, a short distance north in City Park. Try to get a table on the lakeside terrace.
Under the socialist regime, the Andrássy Hotel was administered by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and hosted the likes of visiting Soviet leaders Leonid Brezhnev and Mikhail Gorbachev, cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin and East German strongman Erich Honecker. Thankfully, walls can't talk.
