Fairbanks' best hostel houses backpackers in wall tents, a teepee with two beds (makes for a great semi-private room), and in a chilled-out camping area. The friendly hostel offers nearly everything you could imagine: from a shared kitchen to a book exchange and foosball table.

Go North also offers bike, car and canoe rental, guided backcountry trips and internet. There are a few drawbacks, like the bugs and management's audacity to charge travelers 50 cents a minute for a shower. It's also a long walk from town - get here on the MACS Yellow Line bus route or call ahead for a shuttle pickup.
