Dating back to 1918, the Gellért is Budapest's grande dame of hotels. It's an old-world, four-star hotel with 234 rooms and loads of personality. Gorgeous thermal baths are accessible by a special lift and are free for hotel guests, but with the exception of the terrace brasserie-restaurant on the Kelenhegyi út side, the hotel's other facilities are fairly forgettable.Price depends on room type - there are six varieties - as well as which way the room faces and what sort of bathroom it has. Sadly, Budapest's most famous hotel has not been upgraded for decades; some hillside-facing rooms date back to 1974. Only eight rooms on each of the four floors have been renovated in recent years. If you want a room that at least feels like it could belong to this millennium, ask for one of these (they all face the Danube). Note that lower-level rooms facing the river can be noisy due to both automobile and tram traffic. It's also worth remembering that a few rooms don't have air-con, and in summer those facing north are at least 5°C cooler.

You can't stay at the Gellért and not take the plunge in its Art Nouveau thermal baths and pool, an experience which has been likened to taking a bath in a cathedral.
The Gellért has been commandeered several times for military purposes, including by the communist Béla Kun in 1919, a year after it opened. Later that year it became the headquarters of Admiral Miklós Horthy, Hungarian ruler between the wars.
