Perched above the Danube on Castle Hill, the Budapest Hilton was built (amid much controversy) in and around a 14th-century church and baroque college. Its 322 rooms and its outlets have been renovated in recent memory, but the corridors remain disappointingly sombre, with dark carpeting and low lighting.

The hotel opened in 1976 to mixed reviews, with detractors claiming it ruined the architectural consistency of Castle Hill (now a Unesco World Heritage Site), and wags joking that the best view of Budapest was now from the Hilton. But that hasn't affected the outlook of the rooms. For the best views of the river, Fishermen's Bastion and the Parliament building, choose anything on the 3rd to 6th floors (and we can guarantee that room 518 will have you swooning). It's a top-end choice and very much a business hotel - there's even a CIB Bank in the building - but some people may feel somewhat isolated up here. And the guestroom bathrooms are on the smallish side.
