The Kempinski, Budapest's (and Hungary's) first truly five-star hotel when it opened in 1992, remains very much on top due to its central location, excellent service and interesting modern form. Essentially aimed at business travellers, the hotel has European service, American efficiency and Hungarian charm.A thorough renovation has given the hotel's public areas, 366 guestrooms and suites a fresh look and colour scheme; this time round it's various hues of yellow and blue. We love the somewhat minimalist but oh-so elegant furniture and the classical piano music in the lobby. Many of the rooms overlook what was once a very busy international bus station but has now been turned into a tranquil public park and pedestrian area. If you've really got the dosh, splash out on the Erzsébet Suite - with sublime furnishings, original art on the walls and 120sqm of space. There's a delightful spa on the 2nd floor. Despite the advent of certain grand competitors (not to mention the surfeit of new boutique hotels), the Kempinski is still a top contender.

If you're keen to try Hungarian specialities in basic but homely surrounds, head northeast for 10 minutes to Paulay Ede utca and the Pesti Vendéglo, a popular, family-run place.
The Kempinski is named after King Mátyás, nicknamed 'the Raven' (Corvinus) from his coat of arms, who ruled from 1458 to 1490 and is considered the greatest king of medieval Hungary.
