Though it bears the stigma of being 'just another chain hotel', the 247-room Béke (or 'Peace') Hotel has several things in its favour: a very central location on Budapest's main ring road, a lovely Eclectic building dating from 1914 and great health facilities. The lobby (all marble, gold pilasters, stained glass and Secessionist-style lamps) attempts to recreate the outside within and it succeeds; it's a cool and classy oasis just off busy Teréz körút. The use of stained glass throughout, even as objects d'art in the corridors, also helps set the tone. Indeed, though the public areas have not been renovated for some time, you would hardly know it. Rooms facing the ring road are quiet thanks to double glazing, but choose one closer to the top (i.e. the 8th) floor just to be sure. Bathrooms are disappointingly small but you can always head down to the positively huge swimming pool in the basement for a splash.

Liszt Ferenc tér, a square lined with pubs and bars that spill out onto the terraces in the warmer months, is a 15-minute walk to the southeast from the hotel.
The mosaic on the southern facade of the hotel facing Szondi utca depicts one György Szondy (or Szondi), a captain in the Hungarian army who died fighting the Turkish occupiers in 1552.
