From the outdoor deck of one of Alaska's best hostels you are standing in the heart of downtown Juneau, looking at the state capitol building and above it the snowy peaks of Douglas Island. Inside this large facility is even more impressive. All this for only a few dollars a night. The rules are: 'no smoking, no alcohol and no shoes,' that's how clean, neat and orderly the Juneau International Hostel is. Some guests grumble about the assignment of chores in the morning and lock-out hours, but the location is ideal and the price can't be beat anywhere in Alaska. The hostel contains eight rooms, most with only four bunks each and one set up as a family room. There's also free wi-fi, an internet terminal, lockers, laundry facilities, and a lending library. The dining area is warmed by hardwood floors and a fireplace and the common area features overstuffed sofas strategically placed around a large bay window with a view of the mountains. Want to go hiking? The Mt Roberts Trail is only three blocks away.

For an interesting afternoon, walk two blocks up Harris St then follow Basin Rd as it curves away from the city and into the mountains. Within this beautiful setting of peaks and a rushing creek, you can hike the Perseverance Trail, visit the Last Chance Mining Museum (tel: 586 5338; 1001 Basin Rd) or pack a gold pan and try to find a little color yourself.
