This magnificent hotel was created out of the long derelict Art Nouveau Gresham Palace, which dates back to 1907. No expense has been spared to piece back together the palace's Zsolnay tiles, famous wrought-iron Peacock Gates and splendid mosaics that were left pockmarked and broken after WWII. The hotel is truly worthy of its name.

As palatial as the hotel's public areas are, its guestrooms - half of which face the Danube and Buda Castle - are tasteful and restrained, retaining many of their original features. We love the DVD players and L'Occitane products in each room and the black-and-white bathrooms with both shower cabin and bathtub. The spa on the 5th floor, with smallish infinity lap pool and iced towels at the ready, is the most beautiful in the city. Service is friendly and very professional. The hotel's Italian restaurant Páva and its cafe (in reality, a PPR, or 'popularly priced restaurant' as they say in the trade) remain two of the most talked-about outlets in town.
