Decades in the remaking, the one-time Royal Hotel on the Big Ring Road is now a very grand 414-room, five-star hotel, and its lobby - a double atrium with massive marble staircase - is among the most impressive in the capital. The hotel really is 'a legend reborn'.

Dating back more than a century - it was the largest and most modern hotel in the Austro-Hungarian Empire when it opened in 1896 to mark the millennium of the Magyar conquest of the Carpathian Basin - the Royal has been fully restored. The Grand Ballroom, with its tracery and scrollwork, is a work of art (though, believe it or not, most of what you'll see here is new). Guestrooms, though sombrely furnished in shades of brown, tan and deep red, are large; the best ones give on to one of the atriums. The restored Royal Spa is now as modern as tomorrow.
