Address: Postas 17 , Madrid 28012, Spain Show on map
One of the best hotels to open in central Madrid in recent years, this outstanding place combines a splendid historic building, a brilliant location - just 50m (164ft) from the Plaza Mayor - and modern, hi-tech rooms that are supremely comfortable. The original building was the oldest posada (inn) in Spain and was founded in 1610 - that's how long travellers and traders have been drawn here to the surrounds of the Puerta del Sol and Plaza Mayor. Many historical architectural features remain in the public areas, with exposed brickwork and wooden beams. Fused onto this heritage are stunning, high-tech fittings (internet connections, flat-screen TVs in most rooms and hydromassage showers) and bathrooms that sparkle. Indeed, everything about the rooms is beautifully appointed and spacious. Friendly, attentive service is another highlight. The location also couldn't be more central and with no passing traffic to disturb you. All in all, it's a great package at a price that puts other European capitals to shame.

Wander across the Plaza Mayor and down to Casa Revuelta (tel: 91 366 33 32; Calle de Latoneros 3), an old-style tapas bar where they serve Madrid's best bacalao (cod) tapas. It's a neighbourhood bar with a regular cast of entertaining characters and their interaction with the shouting bar staff is pure theatre.
The name of the hotel translates as 'the Inn of the Comb' - that's because in the old times, a comb hung from a cord in every room, just in case travellers wanted to look their best before heading out.
