Sophistication has a new home along Gran Vía. The terrific rooms and fine service are a big part of the deal, but it's the rooftop bar that has caused the biggest stir, setting a trend that is being copied all across downtown Madrid.

If you want to create a buzz in Madrid at the moment, make sure your new hotel has a rooftop bar overlooking the city. They're all the rage, but Hotel de las Letras started the craze. The bar's wonderful, but the whole hotel is excellent, with individually styled rooms, each with quotes from famous writers on the walls. We're don't always get the colour scheme - we love the deep red-wine coloured walls in some rooms but we're not as enamoured with the sky blues in others - but it may just come down to personal taste. The building dates from 1917 and the public areas retain original features, including mosaic tiles.
