A budget classic from another era, the Palacio has somehow managed to escape the waves of gentrification sweeping through Montevideo's Ciudad Vieja. With its enviable central location, it's one of the best deals going for travelers who aren't put off by unvarnished simplicity. The ancient Palacio has creaking wood floors, sagging brass beds, antique furniture and a temperamental vintage elevator. The older woman working the front desk is a bit of a curmudgeon, and the water pressure can be erratic. But the rooms are full of character. What you see here is what you get - there are no 21st-century frills like breakfast or internet, just original period details like decorative tiles and old bathtubs with brass fixtures. Try for one of the two 6th-floor rooms; both have large balconies with good views of Ciudad Vieja.

Culture is always just around the corner in this part of Ciudad Vieja. Within one block of the hotel are the Centro Cultural de España (Calle Rincón 629), which hosts rotating art exhibits and performances, and Museo Torres García (Sarandí 683), which showcases the work of 20th-century Uruguayan painter Torres García and his contemporaries.
