Built in the 1800s as the home of a rich champagne merchant, this luxurious four-star hotel retains its original coffered ceilings, stained glass and furnishings. The sweeping wooden staircase imparts a certain retro theatricality to the place as does the freestone entranceway with its lantern dome and fresco.

The 17 rooms and suites, in both the original main building and an ugly modern annexe, are not as splendid as the public areas but they do come with luscious fabrics, varying colour schemes and modern marble bathrooms. Street-facing room No 11 is recommended for its generous proportions, especially in its bathroom. A bonus is the basement swimming pool with adjacent hamman, sauna and Jacuzzi. The very floral conservatory is where breakfast is served but head for the little courtyard garden in fine weather.
