Nicely located on a pretty, tree-lined street in Ipanema, Yaya Hotel is a small converted private house that rents clean and simple rooms at reasonable prices. It still has a brand-new feel (it opened in 2007), and the location is superb.

High-rise hotels are generally the norm in Rio - particularly in Ipanema and Copacabana - which makes this place all the more of a find. Yaya has eight private rooms, which are sparsely furnished but with a trim, modern, inviting look. Some are on the small side and could use a bit more light, but overall, the designers have done a decent job making use of the limited space. The bigger shortcoming is the lack of ensuite options. The rooms share four bathrooms in the hall. But for the youngish 20-something crowd who stays here, it's all about the location. A short stroll from the door is the lake, the best bars of Ipanema and the most fashionable part of Ipanema beach. Breakfast is served until 13.00 - a nice touch for this nightlife-loving city.
