Rio's loveliest new hotel opened in late 2007 to much fanfare with its brilliant rooms, decadent seafood restaurant and uber-stylish bar. Views from the rooftop pool are truly breathtaking - as are the room rates.

The Fasano is a boutique hotel, par excellence. Entering the wood- and leather-trimmed lobby, you're immediately whisked into the stylish and artfully skewed world of Philippe Starck, the famed architect who designed the hotel (only his second project in Latin America). The timber of a massive pekia tree serves as the check-in desk and large windows bring the beachfront into the hotel. The 91 rooms are handsomely set with yellow onyx lamps, touches of whimsy (tree-stump like nightstands, oblong mirrors in various sizes) plus Egyptian cotton sheets, goose down pillows, plasma TV screens (with DVD players) and the like. The 10 suites all have balconies overlooking Ipanema beach. At these prices, it's not worth it unless you get a room with a beach view (note that 'courtyard view' is actually no view at all).
