Guests of this opulent four-star hotel enjoy sleek modern public spaces, romantic watery views and marble bathrooms worthy of a Roman emperor. The 1970s-style breakfast room is decorated with brazen shades of orange not seen since mood rings went out of style.

This romantic hotel, in a former ice factory built a century ago, is characterised by minimalist sophistication, with fresh-cut flowers in the lobby, original watercolours and oils in the hallways and a gargantuan snowflake etched in glass to greet arriving guests. In the lobby, four 19th-century sluice gates - still used to regulate the flow of the river - lurk behind a glass wall. If you're in one of the rooms over the lock, your stay will be accompanied by the rush of water, which can be calming (no need to bring along New Age relaxation music) or nerve-wracking (sworn urbanites might try pre-recording the sound of ambulance sirens). That innocent-looking wood barn across the street is, in fact, a parking garage with trilevel mechanical car elevators. Bringing along Fido or Mitzi will set you back 20.00.
