This busy budget hotel above an even busier bar rocks - quite literally - with a mixed bag of music-loving punters ('I have guests who walk in with a plastic bag and guests in suits' says management) who flock here to sleep beneath the gaze of their greatest rock idol.Spacious but essentially functional rooms exude a certain bought-that-furniture-in-a-flea-market, improvised air, but who cares? What makes Zic Zac so special is its themed rooms, each individually designed by a local student or impoverished upcoming artist picked up by management on the streets (take the Romanian graffiti artist who created Guns 'n Roses...). The Who, the Beatles, Deep Purple, Bowie, Elvis, the Stones and Zappa are among the 51 rock acts represented with posters, vinyl and other memorabilia. Pink Floyd is the rock god to enliven the best room in the house - a junior suite with separate TV room, dark blue walls and billowing blue fabric lit with pink fairy lights above the blue bed.

If you didn't manage to score a ticket for the Stones at the 13,000-seater Hallenstadion (Wallisellenstrasse 45), take in some local live rock, punk, R'n'B and other sounds at a more intimate venues like Rote Fabrik or Kanzlei instead.
