Ballardian sculptures, urban art, a cinema, spa and bar...this little complex swims in alternative energy and embodies Byron at its best. Having nurtured this ethos for several decades, it actually does feel like an artists' retreat, so the name is truly justified. The beds here are firmly in the budget range. Colourful dorms are six to twelve-bedded and bunked or, for more adventure (and mosquitos), you can cosy up in a teepee tent dorm. For the couples or twins the choice includes bunking down in a 'cube', which quite aptly describes a basic concrete double with bar fridge thrown in, or the cute safari tents. But a step up in price will land you upstairs in an en suite room with more space and light. Guests nurture their inner hippie in didgeridoo making workshops, yoga, meditation and reiki massage. They also nurture their inner Aussie in pool competitions, bush tucker tours and by committing themselves to lengthy sessions at the Buddha Bar.

Within stumbling distance from your dorm is Byron's Buddha Bar and Restaurant. It dishes up a damn fine Tandoori chicken tenderloin alongside vegetarian treats, plump bangers and mash, and Cajun spiced barramundi. After the beer and grub have settled you can dance it off courtesy of a live DJ or grab your pillow and snuggle down at the Pighouse Flick's late movie session.
Many moons ago the Buddha Bar was a pig slaughterhouse. Though renovated, it's still the best spot in Byron to get slaughtered.
