Housed in the magnificent neo-Moorish KL Train Station is this grand, cavernous colonial-era hotel. Despite the heavy historical patina most rooms have modern decor, but there are grander colonial-style suites available if you really want to get in the mood. Check out the original fixtures, including the lift. Breakfast is included.

This hotel is a trainspotters dream come true, but the almost crumbling grandeur of this place will impress all. The reception area stands next to a bar and bistro that has maintained its warm imperial glow over the years. A clunky lift takes you up to the long corridors of rooms, perhaps via the neglected yet atmosphere-charged bistro area with historical wall hangings and Moorish arched windows. The decor inside the suites is more Sweden than Somerset (pine panelling and bone-hued linen), but if you're really after the full colonial feel, four-poster beds await in the heritage rooms. Dorms sleep six and are very competitively priced. Staying here is not only an experience, trains across KL and beyond are at your doorstep.
