Lonely Planet review

This friendly hotel is very basic, with fans (no air-con) and shared bathrooms, but the location makes up for these shortcomings for travellers on a tight budget who want a Downtown address. Even if you're determined to score centrally located budget digs in Cairo, it's probably advisable to shut your eyes during the rickety lift ride to the sixth floor. The stairwell filth and missing door of the lift are not encouraging signs and may see you heading straight back down, but once inside this small (awful-green-coloured) hotel, the reception is friendly. You soon discover that the hotel is really just a hallway with rooms off it, with all rooms having fans and share bathroom. One bathroom has a shower and one has a bath. The hotel primarily caters to backpackers and students who don't seem to mind peeling paint and threadbare sheets, but in the height of summer the heat becomes an issue for even the most blasé traveller.
