This old hotel is a long-time favourite with Egyptologists and groups of students wanting to emulate them. These days the place is looking pretty worn out, but the friendly and helpful staff coupled with the excellent location keep the place busy. While the hotel retains an air of old Cairo, it's starting to have a disconcerting boarding school-cum-nursing home feel to it. It's fairly clean, just in desperate need of a sensitive renovation. There's a good variety of rooms available and if you're staying in summer the air-con rooms are recommended. The main thing that makes this place stand out these days is the very friendly and helpful staff - they organise pick-ups and transfers from the airport, can arrange tours (day trips/shows), provide maps, and happily help with general info. The other thing that makes this a stand-out from other budget Cairo digs (which isn't exactly hard), is the balconies with their interesting views of the local neighbourhood with the glittering Nile in the background.
