The most buzzy of the city five-stars, this makes an excellent base for Cairo sightseeing. It's a great place to come back to after a hard day's sightseeing, with its vast pool area, lovely foyer cafe (perfect for Nile sunsets), and excellent restaurants. This hotel is such an institution that it's almost a must-see sight in itself, having played a huge role in Cairo's social life for the past few decades, with romances, weddings and anniversaries all taking place under its roof. The hotel is always busy; whether it's friends meeting up to gossip over the Middle East tunes of the house band in the atmospheric lobby cafe, families sampling the authentic Lebanese of uber-stylish Sabaya or Cairo's best belly dancer mesmerising audiences at the Haroun nightclub. The rooms here are wonderfully comfortable and large, with all mod cons, amenities and good toiletries. Many have fantastic views of the Nile and the feluccas (traditional sailing boats), perfect for a nerve-calming drink after a hassle-filled hot day of sightseeing.

This is a fantastic area - close to the Egyptian Museum and right on the Nile. Taking a felucca ride at sunset should be on your agenda, and if you're getting sick (literally or metaphorically) of Egyptian food, the cuisine of the hotel's chic Thai Birdcage is appealingly authentic.
Take an afternoon nap - the bellydancer usually doesn't go on until at least 02:00.
