Pith-helmeted doormen greet you at Cape Town's most famous hotel, the sugar pink-coated 'Nellie'. Surrounded by acres of lush gardens and dating from 1899, this grand dame still remains on top hotel lists the world over, mostly due to its high level of service.Over the last few years the Nellie has made heroic efforts to shake off its reputation as a has-been, with an extensive program of renovations and the building of several blocks of new rooms. The once dark lounge has been redesigned in light and airy shades of pale green and silver, with glittering chandeliers and a tinkling pianist accompanying the legendary afternoon tea. The champagne bar, Planet, has become one of the most stylish party venues in town. The rooms are huge and possessed of every comfort, although they will be a little too much on the floral and chintzy side for die-hard style junkies to enjoy. The only downside of the building's antiquity is the fact that the hot water can occasionally be a bit temperamental.

The Mount Nelson's Librisa Spa - with saunas, steam rooms, plunge pools and 10 soothingly decorated treatment rooms - is a heavenly sanctuary of pampering in a separate Victorian-style house from the main hotel.
Past guests at the 'Nellie' include a young newspaper reporter named Winston Churchill, who stayed here while covering the Boer War.
