Lonely Planet review

When Daddy Long Legs launched this hotel-cum-art installation a few years ago it proved that boutique need not mean boring. Thirteen artists and designers were given a budget and open-ended brief to make each room their own special creation.

The impressive and surprising results range from a bohemian garret à la Moulin Rouge to a freaky hospital ward - check them all out in advance on the hotel's website. Our favourites include the karaoke room hung with mikes (including one in the shower), the Freshly Ground room that features cute cartoon paintings of the hip multi-ethnic Capetonian band, and the Open room plastered with snap shots of beautiful sunsets reflected in mirrored panels. While the rooms are not particularly practical for long stays - there's little space for luggage for example - a night at Daddy Long Legs is more about the experience. There's always an art exhibition going on in the hotel's corridors, lobby and bar-lounge area which opens out on to spacious balcony with views up and down Long St.
