Split between two houses, the Green Elephant is a deservedly popular alternative to the city-centre hostels, with a reassuringly hippy, bohemian air pervading the place. There's even a jacuzzi in the front garden. The green elephants of the name are everywhere - herds of them march around the bright orange outer walls, and a giant pair of pachyderm buttocks (green of course, and complete with tail) straddle the archway at the top of the stairs. The interior is pleasantly scruffy, with a small honesty bar, the obligatory pool table, a good-sized and well-equipped self-catering kitchen and adequate shower rooms. Upstairs, the TV room with its invitingly squishy chairs is supplemented by a long outside veranda perfect for a smoke or a late-night conversation. The big house can be a bit draughty in winter, so bring a jumper if you plan to visit between May and September. Across the road, the Green Ele's annexe has a set of brightly painted double and triple rooms with their own kitchen and a quieter vibe.
