Address: Steenberg estate tokai , Cape town 7945, South africa
The history of Steenberg dates back to 1682, when the land was granted to Catharina Ras, a feisty immigrant from Germany who got through no less than five husbands in her lifetime. The first wine was made here in 1695, and the cellars are still producing award-winning bottles today, now under the ownership of Graham Beck.Mr Beck has added the striking metallic sculptures of Elrado Villa to the property but otherwise the buildings of the original farm and wine estate remain intact and have been converted into a luxury hotel, with rooms in the old manor house and surrounding buildings. There's an 18-hole golf course on site, a restaurant, Catharina's, and a fully working wine farm. The rooms are split into two types - the stately colonial-style rooms in the old manor are filled with antiques, oil paintings and heavy fabrics, while those in the adjoining cottages and former barn are more modern, with huge open-plan bathrooms in honey-coloured marble. There are marvellous views from the restaurant terrace, with manicured lawns giving way to serried rows of vines and then the stark, towering grey face of the mountain. Jazz brunch takes place on the lawn every Sunday in summer.

Don't miss out on a tasting here of wines made by, among others, Ruth Penfold, a former young winemaker of the year. You'll be treated also to the lively tale of Catharina Ras.
The estate, originally known as Swaaneweide (feeding place of the swans), was founded by Catharina Ustings Ras, one of the Cape's most daring and controversial figures. Widowed at 22, she married her second husband soon after arriving in the Cape. He was eaten by a lion some years later, whereupon she married three times more, with her next two unfortunate spouses being murdered by natives and trampled by an elephant respectively.
