Just steps to the Night Bazaar, Chiang Mai's version of the W is carefully crafted for the iPod generation with hip but functional decor and lots of youthful gadgets and gimmicks.Chiang Mai is far from mastering urban chic, but the D2hotel brand has come along to tutor this backwards-looking city in the ways of the future, creating a big-city cocktail with its 'lifestyle' concept pad just steps from the Night Bazaar. The welcome drink comes in a purposefully designed wobbling glass to amuse and confuse the senses, and the lobby is a clean minimalist space of geometric, Thai designer furniture with a white and orange palette. Unlike other hipster hotels, the rooms prefer function over form and the studio suites have an urban apartment feel. For fun there's the Mix Bar with its custom cocktails and house-mixed lounge music, issued on its own D2 label. The fitness centre with a view of Doi Suthep will inspire a little longer on the treadmill.
