Lonely Planet review

Many travellers have recommended this comfortable, five-bedroom guesthouse located in an elegant Victorian terrace off Leith Walk. The house dates from 1856, and the owners have a good eye for antiques (including, unusually, antique radios) - period furniture gives the bedrooms a pleasantly old-fashioned atmosphere.

All the rooms have firm, comfortable mattresses and good bedside reading lamps, but if you have a choice go for the family room on the 1st floor (one double and one single bed), with its arched bay windows, ornate corniced ceiling, and en suite bathroom (the only en suite room in the house; the other four share a pair of spacious shower rooms). The bright, bay-windowed dining room is graced with an antique dresser, a period black marble fireplace and a huge, 1930s Bakelite radio. Breakfast is a convivial affair, with guests arranged around a huge, antique mahogany table, swapping Edinburgh experiences and choosing from a menu that includes bacon and eggs, cheese and biscuits, fresh fruit and porridge. It's a bit of a hike from the city centre, but there are plenty of buses on nearby Leith Walk.
