If Helsinki is the daughter of the Baltic then this grand hotel is her most dashing suitor. It has courted celebrity visitors for decades including heroes of the National Romantic period such as Sibelius and Gallen-Kallela.

Everything about this place is luxurious. Inaugurated in 1887, the Kämp was one of Europe's classic hotels. It was eventually knocked down and converted into offices, although the opulent facade - all balustrades and pilasters - and some interior features were retained. It was reconverted to a hotel in 1999. Rooms are five-star period pieces - very attractively furnished and comfortable, with large beds and gorgeous marble bathrooms that feature the hotel's trademark rubber duck. Rooms look inwards onto the courtyard or shopping mall galleria, which makes for a quiet stay. The saunas (there are three including a eucalyptus inhalation), the plush day spa and the award-winning Japanese restaurant mean there's little reason to leave the lap of luxury.
