If you're fine with a 10-minute walk to the beach, the Ohana Maile Sky Court is a gem. Unlike the dingy, retro (and I'm talking bad retro) vibe at many Kuhio Ave hotels, here you'll find an airy little lobby complete with koi pond and spic-and-span rooms. This 596-unit high-rise is popular with business people and packagers, and you can luck out on amazingly cheap deals. It's not a wanna-be party hotel, so you avoid the fake-tropical cheesiness rampant at many Kuhio Ave places. Instead this business-level hotel comes across as clean and modern. All rooms have a mini fridge and coffee maker, while kitchenettes are well-equipped. All rooms also have a blow dryer, iron and board, plus daily Honolulu Star-Bulletin newspaper. Access is safe, as you need a key card to access guest floors from the elevator. There are no ocean-front rooms, but the view of the Ala Wai canal and golf course and Diamond Head in the distance are scenic.

The 5th-floor pool and Jacuzzi aren't worth visiting (you're surrounded by a view of high-rises), but the pool tables at the adjacent bar, The Deep End (open from 11:00-02:00), might make for a fun, if cheesy, private party away from the crowds. Unfortunately the lobby-level restaurant is a TGIFridays, but don't worry, you can easily eat elsewhere.
