Cordial is a very friendly option well away from backpacker-central, Akbiyik Caddesi in Sultanahmet, but still very close to the sights. There is a huge selection of rooms and a great bunker-style lounge/bar. It's also the closest budget option to the Grand Bazaar. You can't miss the hideous exterior of the oversized Cordial, but inside the managers have enlivened the somewhat industrial feel of the place by painting it in every colour of the rainbow. There are a variety of well-kept rooms, some with ensuites, some without. Those looking on to the street are lightest. Dorms have six or eight beds, are reasonably roomy and well-kept, though some of the carpets need replacing. En suites are good and clean too, though shared bathrooms may remind you of school camp. Because it's so huge and labyrinthine, once people go to their rooms they seem to disappear. Luckily this is no Hotel California: the big plus of Cordial is the gigantic lounge. Guests congregate here at night on the bar stools or the comfy couches. There's cable TV and a pool table.

A few steps away is Cennet, a fabulously kitsch 'authentic' Anatolian eating experience. Set in part of the historic Çemberlitas Hamami (also well worth a visit), at this eatery you can don Ottoman costumes, recline 'Ottoman-style' and listen to 'Ottoman' musicians. A tourist trap par excellence and we love it.
