Lonely Planet review

If you've ever fancied yourself as a colonial type - puffing on a pipe, with a book on your lap, sitting in an oversized chair by the fireplace - St Andrews may be the place for you. Set on a hill overlooking the Old City, with leafy gardens and an imposing stone facade, it even feels like a bit of Scotland transported to the Middle East.

Built in 1927, based on the design of one Clifford Holliday, the buildings are an intriguing mix of Western and Oriental influences. Take note of the exquisite Armenian tiles outside the entrance to the guesthouse and church (these were designed in a workshop on the Via Dolorosa). The antique atmosphere can also be found in the colonial-style 'Scots Coffee Shop'. Furnished and decorated with wicker chairs, fresh flowers and a piano, this is a perfect place to try out a number of delicious menu options, including an excellent brownie and ice cream concoction. The rooms upstairs, less pretentious than the lobby and cafe, are plainly furnished. Some rooms include balconies and those that don't still have access to a large sun deck. There is one room on the 1st floor with access for people with impaired mobility.
