Very close to the Mandela Museum, this is Soweto's second-oldest B&B. It's wonderfully kitschy (we love the huge ceramic tigers), and Anastacia - an expert on local accommodation and attractions - is a great host. This charming family home has four neat, impeccably clean doubles set around a lounge and dining room. The decor is a concoction of goods both homemade and imported, procured at one of the plethora of markets that have sprung up in Soweto and surrounding areas in recent times. We're talking kitsch crockery, knitted doileys, plastic fruit, pink velvet sofas and porcelain tigers… The result is classic Sowetan suburban chic, and totally irresistible. Opened during Soweto's hosting of the 2002 World Summit, Thuto's endures thanks to its perfect location, reliable service and hearty meals. If the layout (and lack of natural light) makes the place seem a little cold, the warmth of its host compensates enough to make this one of the township's best short stay options.

Walk north to the Hector Pietersen Memorial and Heroes Acre. These commemorate former citizens who fell during the struggle for liberation. West is the Mandela Museum, former home of South Africa's greatest son, and famous Vilakazi St, where Nambitha and Sakhumzi dish up excellent, authentic local fare.
Government minister and former leader of the New National Party Marthinus van Schalkwyk stayed here with his family in 2004.
