Lonely Planet review

Not to be confused with the imposing Butler House a few doors further up the hill. The proprietors of this lovely little lodging, Yvonne and Jack, have put painstaking thought and care into every aspect of its design.

Wrapping around a courtyard peacefully recessed from the street, this 21st-century guesthouse was originally the mail coach yard for Kilkenny Castle. Today the central courtyard's a picture in summer, when it's filled with flowers. Rooms are impeccably decorated with Canadian cherry solid timber parquet floors, five-star hotel-quality king-size beds, elegant quilts and framed quilted panels overhead, and oyster lights in the slate-tiled en suite bathrooms (one is fully wheelchair accessible including a fold-down in-shower seat). Breakfast, including locally-baked scones and bowls of fresh fruit as well as filtered (not instant!) coffee, is stocked in your in-room fridge. And you won't need to worry about overheating or freezing here, with individually controlled thermostats in all rooms. Butler Court throws in free parking in the multi-storey opposite, but you probably won't need it as there's unrestricted street parking out the front.
