Famous for its rooftop restaurant, this massive hotel has a swimming pool and several good restaurants. With both Japanese- and Western-style rooms, it caters to travellers from around the globe.

Part of a well-known chain, the Rihga Royal Hotel Kyoto is one of Kyoto's most famous hotels. With a seemingly endless parade of events taking place on the premises - weddings, conferences, business meetings - this hotel always feels busy in the common areas. Many of the rooms are a little cramped, which is why we recommend the Japanese-style rooms, where the lack of furniture makes up for space constraints. The Rihga is getting a little long in the tooth, but it somehow maintains a dignified atmosphere. The staff are friendly and are always willing to help with a taxi or travel plans. For those who want the convenience of a downtown location and a regular shuttle to JR Kyoto Station, the Rihga is a good choice.
