Anything but standard, this hip hotel has lots of design surprises, starting with the lobby made of recycled glass and the model lounging in a giant fish tank behind the front desk. All rooms have CD players, VCRs and platform beds. It's excellent value, especially if you score one of the cheaper rooms. The Standard seems stuck in perpetual party mode, so don't come here for a quiet night's sleep. Instead, expect a dose of boundary-pushing surprises, including a heated pool fringed by Smurf-blue AstroTurf, a barber who doubles as a tattoo artist, and sake in the minibar. At night the lobby morphs into a chic lounge, and the 24-hour coffee shop is a scene unto itself. That's a good thing, considering the hangovers that may arise. Rooms have electric design touches, like silver beanbag chairs, orange tiled bathrooms, Warhol poppy print curtains and ultra-suede floor pillows. As Austin Powers might say, it's shagadelic, baby! You'll pay a tad more for Sunset Rooms with views of the Sunset Strip and Hollywood Hills.

Cruise west down Sunset Blvd to the first-rate Comedy Store, now with its own reality TV series (there's often no cover charge for the upstairs Belly Room). That Mississippi Delta shack farther west is the legendary House of Blues. Go there for live musical acts (Etta James to West Coast hip-hop to Beck) or the Sunday gospel brunch.
