This hotel is a class act. Overlooking one of the most leafy and agreeable plazas north of the centre, the Gran Hotel Conde Duque combines supreme luxury with a slice of Madrid that tourists rarely see but Madrileños love.

With a plaza in front, your room will be flooded with light (plaza-facing rooms cost no extra and you'll need to book early to get one). Each room is a study in elegance, with a provincial-style decor of dark colours brought alive by stylishly modern lighter tones and hi-tech touches - the hydromassage showers in the 'superior' rooms will have you wondering how you ever survived with a single-jet shower. Rooms are also spacious enough to accommodate comfy armchairs. Luxury here is an overall package - perfect proportions, that all-too-rare perfect harmony between the best of the old and the new, friendly staff who know that theirs is a fine hotel and therefore don't see the need to put on airs and graces. There may be hotels that capture the latest trend, but this is the kind of place that will endure long after the others look dated.
