Occupying a sensational slab of real estate right on the Vieux Port, this classical cream building cased in duck-egg blue shutters has two of the city's fabbest little finds: the Hôtel Belle-Vue's colourful rooms, and the very funky jazz bar La Caravelle.

Wrapping around a wrought iron staircase, rich claret-coloured walls create a dramatic backdrop for local artists who exhibit their work here, making the hotel's public spaces a sort of de facto art gallery. You'll also find art (original or framed prints like Picasso) mounted inside the 19 rooms, which have double-height ceilings, printed fabrics, sparing contemporary furniture, and windows flooding the rooms in Provençal light. There's individually controlled air-conditioning in all rooms, as well as phones, TVs and minibars, and all but two look across the vibrant Vieux Port up to Basilique Notre Dame de la Garde. If you're OK with some rooms being a bit snug (though the expansive views mean you don't feel confined) and the absence of a lift (but rooms on the 4th floor are cheaper), then this is the Marseille of your dreams.
