A polished gem of cool tranquility, the Hôtel Le Germain was born within an ugly 1960s office block at the turn of the 21st century. Though just minutes on foot from McGill University's Roddick Gates, you'll find more business people in this chic shack since prices are too steep for most starving student types.

If the comfy chairs and chill music of the mezzanine interest you, grab a complimentary Italian coffee and take a load off. In the guest rooms, soothing earthy tones contrast nicely with the crisp white 200-percale sheets. Photography covers the wall, providing a welcome change from dated oil paintings and faded watercolours. Keeping business travellers in mind, rooms are fitted with work desks, free wi-fi high-speed Internet and voice mail. A whole slew of other amenities are offered in the business centre, which has both Macs and PCs. Sumptuous bathrooms entice with Aveda toiletries and thick cotton bathrobes; and if you can't bear to leave without them, just order a set from the boutique. All rates include a continental breakfast - croissants, hard-boiled eggs and fruits - served in the mezzanine until 10:30 (one hour later on weekends).
