Readers just can't seem to get enough of this place. Wrought-iron beds and Louis Philippe furnishings lend a suitably Napoleonic touch to this historic 30-room inn, a former judge's residence ('Berthelot 1886' is engraved in stone over the entrance). Rooms are decorated in a warm European style; those at the rear overlook a pretty garden with views of the Basilique Notre-Dame. Breakfast (included) is served in the fine Bonaparte Restaurant, which has been done up in Napoleonic Imperial style.

The 30 good-sized rooms are nonsmoking and either overlook cloistered gardens, romantic cobblestones, or the Basilique Notre Dame. If indulgence is imperative, 200.00 will get you a whirlpool bath and possibly a balcony or glass shower. Free breakfast is extensive if you care to dine in the restaurant (the French toast is highly recommended), or continental if served in your room. Sautéed pesto scallops and wild boar soaked in red wine are just a few of the many choices on the restaurant's à la carte menu, and the three-course table d'hôte is reasonably priced between 22.00 and 26.00. The rooftop courtyard is a good spot for photos, but too small to do much else.
