This hotel has been through many incarnations, from Holiday Inn to Raddison, and back to Holiday Inn. Finally, it was bought by private owners who have done their level best to boutique-ify it. Unfortunately, the execution falls a bit short, but if you can snag a call-ahead discount, it can be worth your while. The lobby is really the best of it. Knock-offs of the old masters hang amidst art deco inspired statues and stained-glass lamps. Mirrors accentuate the gilt enhanced bric-a-brac. It's sort of Vegas meets Paris. Each of the hotel rooms has one stucco wall painted black in an attempt to be mod. And though bathroom doors don't always close properly, the sinks are nifty glass bowls you might see in an architectural magazine. Rooms on higher floors offer relaxing views of the surrounding Overton Park neighborhood. Though it's too far to walk to Memphis' downtown area, a 10-minute car ride will get you there. The swimming pool sits adjacent to the parking lot, but it's actually quite comfortable, with soothing jazzy music piped over loudspeakers and massive white divans for wiling away the afternoon.
